Celebrating Women in Construction: Sarah Shirtliff, Red Seal Welder
In honor of Women in Construction Week, we’re proud to spotlight Sarah Shirtliff, a talented welder at ServcoCanada. With eight years of welding experience, earning her Red Seal certification in 2021, Sarah’s journey into the construction industry began with a genuine love for working with her hands and a flair for creativity. Fond memories of spending time in the garage with her father while growing up cultivated her interest in the field.
Beginning her career like most welders at a metalworking shop, Sarah diligently earned her qualifications, joined Iron Workers Union Local 728, and eventually landed her role at ServcoCanada’s Winnipeg facility. She thrives in the fabrication process, relishing the opportunity to build from scratch and see her work come to life. Her commitment to quality work and her eye for detail have made her an invaluable asset to the team.
When asked about her role at ServcoCanada, Sarah explained that she values the professional environment where quality work is prioritized. She credits much of her growth and development to her supervisor, Ryan Payne, whom she considers a supportive mentor.
For Sarah, welding isn’t just a job—it’s a fulfilling career that allows her to express her creativity and craftsmanship on a daily basis. For other women considering a career in the trades, Sarah’s advice is simple: “Just start. Trust your instincts and embrace the opportunities that come your way. Don’t be afraid to pursue your passions.”
As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, let’s recognize trailblazers like Sarah who continue to inspire and pave the way for future generations of women in the industry. Together, we can promote diversity and inclusivity, ensuring all individuals succeed in construction and beyond.
